In Denmark, as well as in other countries, the public healthcare system is under pressure, as there unfortunately are not enough nurses. The primary reason for this shortage lies in the stressful work environment, where employees are burdened both physically and mentally. By following a methodological approach with several oscillations between convergence and divergence, facilitating the Design Thinking approach one of the areas that was found especially time-consuming, causes work-related physical pain and is prone to errors is the manual de-blistering and dispensing of patients’ tablet and capsule medicine. In order to assist caregivers, nurses and pharmaconomists who can easily reach up to 600-700 tablets a day DEASY have been thoroughly developed trough user exploration, in-depth research, concept ideation and detailed realization to reduce approximately 80% of this physical workload. DEASY is an automated de-blistering device that can ‘detect’ multiple rowed blister pack designs, subsequently ‘adjust’ its inner mechanics hereto and finally ‘extract’ the tablets and capsules into a designated dispensing tray that optimizes dispensing time.
Besides having a general purpose of providing caregivers with a reliable solution that provides comfort, control and efficiency, the project also aims at addressing and questioning problems with current blister pack standardizations being too unrepresentative hoping that change can lead to improved patient care.
