The master thesis project, Seeing the Picture Differently, explores how to accommodate the sensory differences of autistic people while maintaining vibrant city centres. Everyone needs access to urban necessities like grocery shopping, but sensory differences and environments designed by non-autistic people often exclude autistic individuals due to overstimulation.

Nørresundby Torv exemplifies such a space, essential for urban life but currently overstimulating for autistic people.

The thesis proposes transforming Nørresundby Torv into an inclusive area that respects sensory differences between autistic and non-autistic people and the diversity within the autistic community. The redesign organizes the square into low and high stimuli areas, allowing for adjustments to sensory stimuli.

This approach aims to reduce the risk of sensory overstimulation and provide opportunities for autistic individuals to engage with the vibrant city centre of Nørresundby Torv on their terms.

Specialeprojektet, Seeing the Picture Differently, udforsker, hvordan man kan tilpasse de sensoriske forskelle hos autistiske personer og samtidig bevare livlige bycentre. Alle har brug for adgang til byens nødvendigheder som indkøb, men sensoriske forskelle og miljøer designet af ikke-autister udelukker ofte autistiske personer på grund af overstimulation.

Nørresundby Torv er et eksempel på et sådant sted, der er essentielt for bylivet, men som i øjeblikket overstimulerer autistiske personer.

Specialet foreslår at omdanne Nørresundby Torv til et inkluderende område, der respekterer de sensoriske forskelle mellem autistiske og ikke-autistiske personer samt mangfoldigheden inden for det autistiske samfund. Redesignen organiserer pladsen i områder med lav og høj stimuli, hvilket gør det muligt at justere sensoriske stimuli.
